
Adela J. Dziekanowski has 40 years of middle school and high school experience. She earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Montclair State College and an M.S. in Applied Science from New Jersey Institute of Technology and has continued to take graduate courses and take advantage of teacher institutes and other learning opportunities ever since.
She is proud to have been selected as Montville Township's Robert R. Lazar School’s Teacher of the Year (Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program). While at the middle school, Mrs. Dziekanowski mentored students for state and national competitions, resulting in student recognition and awards. She also won several grants, including one that introduced telecommunications and the use of probeware to the school. At the high school, she taught Chemistry, Chemistry Enriched, Earth Science, and Physical Science, and she also acted as advisor to the Key Club.
She was elected a Fellow of New Jersey Science Teachers Association and was named a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellow, which gave her the opportunity to travel to Australia and participate in the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE) World Conference. As a result of her acceptance to the NEWMAST (NASA Educators’ Workshop for Math and Science Teachers) program, she was invited to attend the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and to meet "Teacher-in-Space," Krista McAuliffe. In 2009, she was awarded the NJSTA Citation Scroll, awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to science education. In 2014, she was honored with a Special Award from NJSTA.
Mrs. Dziekanowski is active in the science education community at the local, state, and national levels. She was the founding Co-Director of the New Jersey Science Olympiad and served as President of, Trustee of, Publications Editor for, Chairperson of the Awards and Presentations Committee, Web Manager, and Chairperson of the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award Committee for New Jersey Science Teachers Association. She has presented workshops about science activities, thinking skills, using technology, and cooperative learning for other teachers in the Montville school district, in other New Jersey districts, at New Jersey Science Conventions, and at National Conventions of the National Science Teachers Association. She was a Clean Air Challenge trainer for the Exxon Education Foundation, a Key Leader for the NSTA Building a Presence for Science program, a judge for the NSTA/Toshiba ExploraVision competition, a judge for The Dupont Challenge, and a Master Teacher for the New Teachers’ Institute at Rutgers University. She was a member of the steering committee for the New Jersey Science Convention and currently serves as the Web Manager and coordinates social media for the organization. Recently, she enjoyed serving as a selector for the Woodrow Wilson New Jersey Teaching Fellowships.
